New Documentary Forms exhibition, Tate Modern....

A five room display, featuring 5 contemporary photographers who have all chose to use their practice to extend and question photography as a new documentary form.

The artists included are; Luc Delahaye, Mitch Epstein, Boris Mikhailov, Guy Tillim and Akram Zaatari.

There is a poetic flow between the different artists and the rooms, although 'poetic' might not seem like your intitial choice of words for photographs concerning disturbing social issues, the way in which these artists have told their story relays a sensitive yet beautiful example of context within a photograph.

Finished book... UNCONSCIOUS MEANING

Although we were encouraged to experiment with different layouts I was pretty much set on this idea from the start after researching other Blurb books. I did briefly dabble with other layouts but they just didn't look or feel right to me personally.

Hopefully my intuition has paid off and i've not been too stubborn in my ways... But after seeing my final design, I'm pleased I stuck with it.

Composites

Here's a sneak at some of my composites... I decided to use black and white as personally I rarely see colour in my dreams....

I'm pleased with my decision to use black and white, putting different photos together based purely on their form can produce some strange colour palettes if I'd left them in colour!

Photo ideas....

I've taken over 1,600 photographs for this project and I will probably use a fraction for my actual composites... Better to be safe than sorry though...

Here's a few....

I hired some fog filters from Calumets, as you can see they didnt work very well in the studio.. I can see how they'd have more effect on a dusk or dawn landscape shot.

At the time of getting abby in the studio I knew what half of what my composites were going to look like so I had a rough idea of the kind of positions I wanted to capture Abby in.
But I left the rest quite loose and just had a play really as I knew some photos from that day would spark further ideas.
There are actually quite a few shots from today that I can be used in future.

I've adopted the technique of taking multiple shots in order to get great detail and capture different exposures. Although on start of my composites i soon realised this wasn't relevant, as too much detail didn't complement the 'dream' theme.
However it is something I'd like to develop in future assignments.
